About us
Honoring all of Life
At Dimond Hill Farm we honor all—the land, our animals, wildlife, and you, our customers. We honor you through our commitment to natural, healthful farming practices; first quality healthy produce and products; and friendly, courteous, personal service. We take pride in nourishing your health and your happiness and sharing the farm—its beauty and its bounty—with each and every one of you.
Dimond Hill Farm is a modern day farm with a history that begins in the 1700’s, prior to the American Revolution. As the 6th generation of my family to farm this land, I am committed to honoring the farm’s past, fully realizing the farm’s present potential, and sustaining the farm for generations of farmers and community families yet to come. Through the collaborative efforts of the Trust for Public Land, the Five Rivers Conservation Trust, the Historic Preservation Alliance, and Equity Trust and the hard work and generosity of many community members, the continuation of Dimond Hill Farm as an active farm and a place of serene natural beauty has been assured. Preserving the farm was a critical first step to insuring its sustainability for future generations. And now, my focus returns to researching and implementing farming methods which sustain the vitality and viability of the land.
Our relationship with this land must be one in which we nourish the land as the products of the land nourish us. We must give to in order to receive and we must honor the land in all practices. To that end, we are transitioning from manmade synthetic fertilizers to natural, organic sources of nutrients. We are minimizing our use of pesticides and herbicides and looking for nature-friendly ways to control for insects and weeds. We are composting farm wastes and using the compost to replenish our soils. We rotate our crops and grow our tomatoes in natural coir (coconut fiber) to prevent the development and spread of plant diseases. In combination, these practices restore and regenerate the land, keep it healthy and free of toxins, and ensure the continued viability of the land for growing crops, raising animals, and sustaining natural wildlife. In the future, we hope to decrease our use of fossil fuels by finding non-polluting, renewable sources of energy for heating the high tunnels and fueling our equipment. Our goal at all times is to produce quality vegetables and fruits which enrich your health and are a joy to see and taste.
We relish the wildlife who share our land—song birds, turkeys, geese, bears, deer, moose, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, and other furry four-legged creatures—and endeavor to live our lives in harmony with theirs. While we generally lose a few stalks of fresh corn each season, we are able to minimize our losses by mowing down the stalks in the fields as we finish harvesting the corn, making the unpicked ears readily available for consumption by both birds and animals. Flocks of migrating geese make Dimond Hill a regular stop each autumn and bears gorge themselves in preparation for their long winter sleep.
In the same manner that we must plant and harvest in harmony with the land, we must also raise our farm animals in harmony with their truest nature. By nature, llamas and horses are grazing animals and are healthiest when they have the freedom to graze on grass and hay throughout the day and night. And thus, we take great care to provide our llamas and horses with abundant room to exercise and graze. They are not locked in stalls or barn and instead have the freedom to enjoy the air and to seek shelter when they choose. Our geese are free to roam and graze with the llamas and are only secured in their barn at night to protect them from natural predators. We train all of our animals using natural methods that honor their spirits and build relationships of trust and mutual respect. To the maximum extent possible, we use natural homeopathic remedies and holistic medicine to address any health issues. Our horses are “barefoot” so their hooves are naturally healthy and strong.
I am excited beyond all measure by the potential of this farm and hope that you will find nourishment for your body and your soul on your visits to Dimond Hill.
Warmest regards to you all,
Dimond Hill Farm
